Linux • Trying to get ThumbsPls running again, how to debug?

$

I've been struggling for quite some time now and don't know what to try anymore to get ThumbsPlus (https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... on&iId=257) working.

My Setup is CentOS-7, using the wine32 (v4.0.4) repository from Harbottle. I've tried versions 8 to 10 of ThumbsPlus. The installation works fine and I don't see any serious problems apart from "fixme" lines. But when I start the program it asks me to set up a new database because it cannot connect to its (exisiting) one. That, as well as trying an ODBC database (mariadb, test with isql worked) instead, does not work. With winetricks I tried lots of combinations of jet40/mdac28 and so on, switched to different modes (Win7/XP), and experimented with the override dlls (native/builtin). All without success. Even gave a v5.8 32-bit compile a try with the same results. I'm at my wit's end now and afraid it's just a little fix I just can't figure out.

Wine Help • wmi dependence for WargamingGameCenter in 64bit prefix

$

Hi,
I like playing World of Warships. Everything worked fine until the last update. The update manager has forced the installation of Wargaming Games Center (wgc) which needs to run wmi (Windows Management Instrumentation). Unfortunately in 64bit prefix winetricks does not allow me to install wmi so I can not run wgc. I also tried to run wgc on 32bit prefix with wmi installed and link game from 64bit prefix. wgc starts but when trying to update it returns a message about unsupported 32bit system. Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Linux • Error upon running elementclient.exe (Perfect World)

Hello, everyone!

I recently switched operating system (from Ubuntu to Arch) and I'm having some problems setting up wine so it runs Perfect World International (like it did in Ubuntu).
Since it ran fine in Ubuntu, I suppose the problem might be missing libraries in the new system.

My system information:

CPU: Intel Core i3-8130U
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics (no dedicated GPU)
RAM: 12GB DDR4
OS: Arch Linux (Kernel: Linux 5.6.15-arch1-1)

Error when running elementclient.exe:

This list was bigger and I managed to solve most of the errors, but these I couldn't.

This is what I've already done:
  • Enabled multlib and update the system (this downloaded many 32 bit libraries)
  • Install wine (version 5.9)
  • Install winetricks (version 20200412)
  • Run winetricks allfonts
  • Install lib32-mesa, lib32-pulse, lib32-mpg123, lib32-gnutls, lib32-gst-plugins-base, lib32-gst-plugins-good, samba, krb5, and some other packages
  • Change Windows version to XP
Up to now, my decisions about what to do were based on other posts with related problems and on the Arch Wiki's Wine page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wine. I also tried things like PlayOnLinux with no success.

What else can I try? I'm having trouble understanding what to do given the error list.

Any help would be much appreciated! :D

Linux • Adobe Digital Editions in wine not finding Kobo

$

Hi,

I got Adobe Digital Editions working in wine and finding my kobo eReader (mapped as a floppy drive in winecfg). For the last couple of days however it hasn't been working. When I launch winecfg and switch to the drives tab I get errors of the form

CODE:

wine: Read access denied for device L"\\??\\A:\\", FS volume label and serial are not available.wine: Read access denied for device L"\\??\\E:\\", FS volume label and serial are not available.wine: Read access denied for device L"\\??\\Z:\\", FS volume label and serial are not available.
A is my own mapping to the ereader mount point, E is some sort of automatic detection that wine seems to insist on doing and Z maps to /. The ereader is mounting properly as I can move epub books to it from the terminal and file manager. I need ADE as I borrow books from my library with DRM.

Wine version is wine-5.0.1 installed on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in /opt and updated through the updater service.

All updates are up to date. I don't know if this started just after any particular update was installed as I don't use it that frequently but it has broken in the last three weeks as my books are just about up for renewal!

How can I start troubleshooting?

Wine then crashes and the program doesn't run. I really don't understand the error. I tried removing and reinstalling Wine but that didn't work. Can anyone help?

Linux • Python 3.8 crashes when trying to redirect STDOUT to a file

$

Good day,

Python 3.x installed via the standard installers from python.org seems to run well under Wine. However, I am finding that the Python interpreter crashes when I try to redirect STDOUT to a file. Starting without a Wine Prefix in Ubuntu 20.04 I install Python 3.8.3 https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.8.3 ... -amd64.exe as follows:

CODE:

$ wine python-3.8.3-amd64.exe /quiet Include_doc=0 Include_dev=0 Include_test=0 PrependPath=1
and I can then do the following successfully:

CODE:

$ wine python -c 'print("hello world")'
but when I redirect the output to a file it crashes:

CODE:

$ wine python -c 'print("hello world")' > out.txtFatal Python error: init_sys_streams: can't initialize sys standard streamsPython runtime state: core initializedOSError: [WinError 6] Invalid handleCurrent thread 0x0000002b (most recent call first):<no Python frame>
I have not yet tried to do this with a later version of Wine (I am using

CODE:

wine-5.0 (Ubuntu 5.0-3ubuntu1)
) because this is likely just a misconfiguration issue involving console encodings or environment or am I mistaken?

Doing the above with Python 3.4.4 https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.4.4 ... .amd64.msi installed as follows:

CODE:

$ wine msiexec /i python-3.4.4.amd64.msi
works as expected, it creates a text file out.txt containing "hello world".

Please let me now if I've neglected to include important information or should rather be following this up with the Python developers.

Thank you and kind regards,
Daniel van Niekerk

Linux • dssenh_test-stripped.exe Malware

$
0
0
Linux Mint 19.3
WINE: Github 05/06/20

I'm in the process of compiling the latest Github version of WINE and during the make process Sophos antivirus (Linux edition) reports that this file is malware:

~/Downloads/wine-master/dlls/dssenh/tests/dssenh_test-stripped.exe

As far as I can tell dssenh appears to be Microsoft's Enhanced DSS and Diffie-Hellman Cryptographic Provider. If you upload it to Virus Total there are other engines that detect it too.

Is this a false positive or is it malware? I don't remember having this issue with previous versions of WINE and Sophos AV running.

Thanks in advance

OSes: Debian 9.12, Pop!_OS 19.10, & Ubuntu 20.04
Problem: After the program is opened it states the network is unavailable

Things done so far:

  1. Attempted to use both 64/32 of prefixes on "clean" wine installs of each of the OSes listed above
  2. Installed latest versions of Crossover Linux & PlayOnLinux with the same error message
  3. Installed libnss-mdns:i386
  4. Set /etc/hosts "hostname" IP to LAN IP instead of 127.0.1.1 while leaving localhost at 127.0.0.1
  5. Verified through /drive_c/windows/system32/cmd.exe that the container is reporting the correct LAN IP

macOS • Roccat Mouse Driver – will it work?

$

Hello together,

This software starts with wine staging. first there was the program window and I was asked to install a model for the mouse I have, 'kone aimo'.
Downloading and installing was running but when it showed 100% there did not happen anything else. So I quit the wine-preloader and started again and now I have this other window.

Image

I don't know if it was possible in some way to make such a software for configuring a mouse with wine working at all.
Can somebody recommend working on with this and if, how, or do one have to say "impossible"?

Greetings

Linux • Wine Installation Complexity in Linux

$

For the past several years Wine has become so much more of a headache to install. About 5 years ago one only had to go to the Package Manager, click on Wine to install and that was it. It installed without any issues and you were good to go. Now I have to look all over the Internet to find missing dependicies, instructions, etc. Why has the Wine development team abandoned SIB-KIS? See It Big-Keep It Simple. It seems that Wine has become the proverbial Frankenstein monster!

Hi guys,

I’ve tried loading the .exe for jMorph using wine but unfortunately it does not seem to load. jMorph is a third party application which alters the way your character appears in World of Warcraft. Please can somebody give me a hand? I have tried using the 1.8.6 stable client as well as the 4.0.1.1 but have not had any luck. I did try and load it via the bottler but it’s too complicated for me to understand. I’m currently running OS High Sierra 10.13.6. Thanks in advance!

I have a ASUS C302C Chromebook running Version 81.0.4044.103 (Official Build) (64-bit) and developer mode is enabled.

I downloaded wine-5.9-x86.apk and installed it.

When I click on the icon to open it, all that happens is the display of a prompt which says "Setting up the Window environment..."

I searched the FAQ before posting and didn't see a readme or anything on the download page. But hoping for any assistance one could provide to get this running on my host. Thanks!

Linux • the t.racks DSP Software can't find HID device

$

Hi,
I own one of these devices which comes with a small windows application (download link on the product page).
The software runs without problems on wine, except I can't get it to recognise the DSP connected to my laptop. The DSP itself shows up as a HID device (hidraw) when connected via USB.

What I tried:
I already gave myself r/w access to the hidraw file (both chmod and chown) and enabled the winebus service (it's set to autostart in the registry and 'net start winebus' returns that it's already running. The software still doesn't detect the DSP.

My setup:
OS: Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS
Wine: wine-5.0.1 (winehq-stable)
DSP connected via USB (/dev/hidraw0)

Thanks in advance!

Linux • Icons for uninstalled apps still show up on Linux Mint

$

I'm running WineHQ on Linux Mint and decided to uninstall some applications I no longer use anymore. I did this accessing the menu by typing "winecfg" in the terminal then selecting said programs and uninstalling them. When I go to my apps list the icons still show up, but won't launch the program because the files for it have been deleted. I confirmed this by going through the file system and checking that the files aren't there, which they are not. If it helps the exact version of Mint I'm using is Linux Mine 19.3 Cinnamon. Any ideas on how to solve this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
